Uploading Files to Your Web Space Using WS_FTP LE

The purpose of your personal web space is to share files such as pictures, web pages and other documents via the web. Other uses include transferring files from one location to another by uploading files from one computer and then downloading them to another computer. This can be very useful when you have a larger file that you do not want to send via email.

Files such as jpeg, gif and html pages can be viewed by others on the web by entering the correct URL (Uniform Resource Locator, also known as a web address, i.e. www.sacbee.com or http://members.accessbee.com/customer/camping1.jpg). For more information on how URL's are created, click here (this will help you access your files through a browser when they are uploaded.

The following instructions are for uploading files to your web space. We are assuming here that you have already done the following:

  1. Set up your personal web space by contacting our support technicians.
  2. Downloaded and installed WS_FTP LE.
  3. Set up your FTP account within WS_FTP LE.

Step 1. Open WS_FTP LE if you do not already have it running. Select your FTP account for your accessBee web space, then click 'OK' to connect. You should a window similar to the following.

Fig.1

The left hand window shows the files that reside on your computers hard drive. Technicians refer to this as your 'local drive' or 'local system' referring to the data and files that are 'local' to you. The web space, on the other hand, is referred to as the 'remote drive' or 'remote site' because the files are not on your computer, but on the accessBee web server. These files are represented in the right hand window. If you have not transferred any files into your webspace, it will appear empty as it does above (See Fig. 1)

When we want to see our files on the web or we want to move files from one place to another using our web space, we simply move them from a local drive (your computer) to a remote site (your accessBee web space) by using FTP. Likewise, when we want to download these files from accessBee to any computer, we can use FTP as well.

Before we do that, please read the following section that explains what is known as a 'server time out'.

Server Timeouts: If WS_FTP LE (or any FTP program for that matter) is left idle for any lengthy amount of time, you may lose your FTP connection. This is for security purposes. If at any time during your FTP session you cannot complete some type of action (file transfer, refresh etc.) look in the lower left corner of your FTP window to see if you see the following message.

Fig. 2

This does not mean your modem is disconnected. It simply means that the FTP connection was closed due to inactivity. Simply click the 'Close' button below the message. The button will change into a 'Connect' button. Click connect, which will open the 'Session Properties' dialog box. Select your account if it is not already selected, then click 'OK' to reconnect.

Step 2 Uploading Files:

With your FTP window open and connected to your web space, you want to navigate to where our files reside on your local drive in order to move them to the remote side (your web space). Please see the Fig 3 below. For this example we will pretend we want to upload two images to our web space. The images are on our C: drive in a folder called 'my_pictures'. The photo files are named camping1.jpg and camping2.jpg.

The first step is to locate the images on the local system (your computer) which is represented in the left hand window. By default, this window opens to
C:\Program Files\WS_ftp_prole which can be seen in the figure below. We will change this later, so you can have it open to something else when you launch your FTP connection.

In the left window, scroll down until you see the blue icon with the [-c-] next to it
(see Fig. 3 below).

Fig. 3

In our example, our images are on the C: drive in a folder called my_pictures. Therefore we would double click on the blue icon with the [-c-] next to it to open the C: drive. You should see the contents of your C: drive in the left window. Please note that the contents of everyone's C: drive are different and you may see something different than the figure below. (See Fig. 4 below)

Fig. 4

Now that we are on the drive that we want to get our photos from we must look for the folder that contains the files. In our example, we are looking for a folder called 'my_pictures', but normally we could be looking for any folder on any one of our local drives. In the figure above, we would need to scroll down to find the 'my_pictures' folder (they are alphabetical by default), then double click on that folder's icon to reveal the folders contents. (See Fig. 5 below)

Fig. 5

Now that we have located our files, we want to move them to the remote site (the right side). In order to do that the files must be selected. In order to select a range of files (to move more than one file at a time), click on the first (top) file, then hold down the shift key while clicking on the last file you want to transfer (bottom). All the files in between the two files will be selected. Otherwise, the files can be moved one at a time.

Once the files are selected, click on the arrow button in between the two windows to transfer the files to the remote site (your accessBee site). (See Fig. 6 below)

Fig. 6

After your files are transferred, you would see a screen similar to Fig. 7. The red arrows point to the transferred files as well as the message in the lower left corner that lets you know that the transfer is complete.

Fig. 7

Notice that the button you used to transfer or 'upload' your files to your webspace, points to the right, meaning the files are sent from the left side (local) to the right side (remote). The arrow above that points left, meaning it sends files selected on the remote side (the right window) to your computer (downloading). The files that are being downloaded, will go into the local folder that is currently open (if we were to download the files shown in Fig 7 from our web space, they would go into the 'my_pictures' folder because it is currently open on the local (left) side.

Congratulations! Now all that is left is learning how to see your files on the web! Click here to find out more.
